The Philadelphia Eagles Are the Early Super Bowl LIX Favorites; Will They Live Up to the Hype?

The 2025 National Football League (NFL) begins on September 4, when the Philadelphia Eagles host the Dallas Cowboys at Lincoln Financial Field. It will be the first time the Eagles have been in competitive action since they demolished the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22 at Super Bowl LIX and victoriously lifted the Vince Lombardi Trophy. The top betting sites online predict the Eagles will win back-to-back Super Bowls, but how accurate are those predictions likely to be?

Although the Eagles were slow out of the blocks in 2024, entering their bye week with a 2-2 record, Nick Sirianni's men won 12 of their next 13 regular-season fixtures to finish 14-3 and clinch the NFC East title. The only blot on the Eagles ' copybook was a 33-36 loss on the road to the Washington Commanders in Week 16.

The Eagles sailed through the playoffs with relative ease, sweeping aside the Green Bay Packers (22-10), the Los Angeles Rams (28-22), and the Washington Commanders (55-23) before blitzing the Kansas City Chiefs (40-22) at the Caesars Superdome to win Super Bowl LIX.

Statistically, The Eagles Were Brilliant in 2024

Football is a game packed with statistics, and the Eagles' offensive and defensive stars were superb through the 2024 regular season. Although the Eagles ranked a lowly 29th in the league for passing yards (3,194) and 12th for passing touchdowns (24), their rushing game was incredible. The Eagles gained the second-most rushing yards (3,048) and touchdowns (29).

Saquon Barkley was responsible for the bulk of those rushing yards. He racked up a career and league-best 2,005 yards and 13 touchdowns across 16 games. 

They were also defensively tight. The Eagles' defense gave up the fewest passing yards (2,961), the joint fifth-fewest passing touchdowns (22), the tenth fewest rushing yards (1,771), and the second-fewest rushing touchdowns (9). That red-hot offense and airtight defense resulted in the Eagles enjoying the second-best points differential (160) across 17 regular-season games.

Positives for the Eagles' 2025 Season

We have already seen that the Eagles were a statistical powerhouse during the 2024 NFL season, and winning teams tend not to drop off too much following a Super Bowl victory. Several members of the Eagles' title-winning team put pen to paper on new deals.

Superstar running back Saquon Barkley signed a two-year, $41.2 million contract extension, making him the highest-paid running back in NFL history. Center Cam Jurgens signed a four-year, $68 million extension, while the Eagles exercised a fifth-year option on Jordan Davis' contract, tying him to the Lincoln Financial Field through the 2026 season.

Linebacker Zack Baun is also staying put. Baun enjoyed a career season in 2024, finishing with 152 tackles, 3.5 sacks, five forced fumbles, and an interception. Baun signed a three-year, $51 million contract.

Negatives for the Eagles' 2025 Season

Unfortunately for Eagles fans, the team couldn't keep hold of all of its stars. Defensive End Milton Williams headed to the New England Patriots, where he signed a four-year, $104 million contract, which made him the highest-paid Patriots player ever in terms of annual salary.

Additionally, Josh Sweat, who played 104 games, made 237 tackles, and had 43 sacks since the Eagles drafted him in 2018, is now an Arizona Cardinals player. Sweat signed a four-year deal worth up to $76.4 million.

Also, you should not underestimate the strength of schedule. Last season, the Eagles had one of the easiest schedules, at least on paper, with the NFL ranking it tied for 21st. However, the Eagles' 2025 schedule is considered the fourth toughest in the league.

Lastly, if you believe in such things, history is not on the Eagles' side. Only eight teams in the Super Bowl era have managed to win back-to-back Super Bowls. Injuries were kind to the Eagles' rosters last year; they cannot avoid them forever.

Can The Philadelphia Eagles Win the Super Bowl Again?

The question on everyone's lips is, can the Philadelphia Eagles win Super Bowl LX? The answer is most definitely yes. Despite losing some key personnel, having a much more demanding schedule, and having history working against them, the Eagles would have to significantly regress to not be legitimate Super Bowl contenders in 2025.

They are the team to beat in the NFC East, even if the Washington Commanders will likely be strong again this season. In fact, the Detroit Lions aside, it's challenging to think of an NFC team that will finish with a better regular-season record than the Eagles. If the Eagles' roster remains fit and healthy, they could and should win back-to-back Super Bowls.

If Not the Eagles, Who Will Become Super Bowl Champions?

Outside of the Eagles, most bookmakers have the usual suspects of the Buffalo Bills, Baltimore Ravens, the Kansas City Chiefs, and the free-scoring Detroit Lions as the teams most likely to lift the Vince Lombardi Trophy on February 8, 2026. 

Although you should never write off the Kansas City Chiefs if only because Andy Reid's men have a knack for getting results when they most need them, the Detroit Lions look like a good outside bet. For the past two seasons, injuries have plagued the Lions at the business end of the campaign. Surely that kind of bad luck cannot strike three times?

Too many variables must align for any of the teams not mentioned above to be genuine Super Bowl contenders. They must have almost perfect seasons and avoid injuries to star players, all while hoping the Super Bowl favorites drop the ball, so to speak. Perhaps that means this upcoming Super Bowl is the Eagles' to lose? We don't have long to wait to find out if that is the case.
