Every Premier League Team Top at Christmas and Where They Finished Each Season

The race to finish top of the Premier League is exciting every year, even though Man City has dominated for the last four years. We’ve looked closely at which teams were top at Christmas over the last decade and where they finished the season.

Premier League Table at Christmas: Last 10 Years

The last four years have seen Man City rise to the top of the pile, regardless of who was top at Christmas. However, there’s been plenty of variation over the years, meaning top at Christmas doesn’t always finish as league winners.

The table shows that you can’t always rely on the Christmas leaders to win the league when making predictions. If you’re going to make your picks, your first step is to claim sweepstakes casinos no deposit bonuses and then research how things will likely end.

2014/15: Chelsea - Chelsea

The oldest event on our list is the first in a run of the team that was top at Christmas winning the Premier League. Despite Man City's recent dominance, Chelsea was once just as strong. Although this wasn’t their last time as Premier League winners, it was the beginning of the end of their golden age. However, they managed to keep their position as leaders at Christmas and lift the trophy when the season ended.

2015/16 Leicester - Leicester

Possibly the most famous league win in the history of the Premier League. After almost getting relegated in the previous season, Leicester sacked their manager and employed the legendary Claudio Ranieri. He took the team on an incredible run, spearheaded by Jamie Vardy and underpinned by N’golo Kante. Leicester hit the top spot for Christmas and completed an astonishing triumph at the end of the season. It’s one of the most famous stories of beating the odds.

2016/17: Chelsea - Chelsea

After seeing how impressive N’golo Kante was for Leicester the previous year, Chelsea made a move from him. They brought him in, and it instantly improved their team. They looked unbeatable sometimes, and the league win was rarely in doubt. Although they hadn’t won the league at Christmas, they were on a solid path towards the title. It finished as expected, with Chelsea adding another title to their haul. However, since that season, they haven’t added any more.

2017/18: Man City - Man City

Man City showed everyone a sign of things to come. In the 17/18 season, they were dominant throughout. It was Guardiola’s second season in charge, and they won the league in style. Not only did they manage to be top at Christmas and finish the season as champions, but Man City also got 100 points. City also added an EFL cup to their trophy haul, but it was nothing compared to the next season.

2018/19: Liverpool - Man City

While the Leicester title win is historically incredible, the Man City title win in 2018/19 is also amazing. It’s one of the few times that the league winners finished just one point above second place. In addition, Liverpool finished second with 97 points, a record for a team that didn’t win the league. City was also the first men’s team to win the domestic treble, so it was a landmark season for many reasons.

2019/20: Liverpool - Liverpool

After years of trying, Liverpool finally managed to win the Premier League. 2019/20 was the fifth time that Liverpool had been top at Christmas since the 1992 switch from Division One to the Premier League. It was the first time they had turned that into a league title. Liverpool will be hoping they can repeat the feat in 24/25, with them currently at the top of the table, but the statistics aren’t on their side.

2020/21: Liverpool - Man City

In 2020/21, Liverpool again was at the top at Christmas, only to let it slip by the end of the season. It means that, in total, from six Christmas top spots, the Reds have turned it into a single league title. However, the 20/21 season started a record-breaking run for Man City, the first of four titles in a row.

2021/22: Man City - Man City

The 21/22 season was the third time Man City hit the top spot at Christmas, and they made it a perfect record of league wins from that position. Pep Guardiola went on an incredible run this season but couldn’t claim his most treasured prize, the Champions League.

2022/23: Arsenal - Man City

After losing Arteta to Arsenal during the 2019/20 season, it took a while for Man City to have a true contender. However, by the 22/23 season, Arsenal looked like a strong team. They didn’t take into account that Man City had a secret weapon. Erling Haaland. Although Arsenal were the angel at the top of the tree at Christmas, Man City’s Norwegian striker kept delivering goals. Not only did he help City claim a third straight title and fired them to their first Champions League, rounding off a continental treble with an FA Cup win.

2023/24: Arsenal - Man City

Man City didn’t manage to win another treble in the 23/24 season, but they did repeat the Premier League of 22/23. Arsenal again claimed the top spot at Christmas, but the unstoppable Guardiola juggernaut meant it was a fourth straight Man City Premier League.

Christmas Positioning

Although it’s always good to hit the top spot where possible, it doesn’t guarantee a title win if you claim it for Christmas. In the last five seasons, only two teams top at Christmas have won the league. Liverpool and Man City. The Reds will hope they can repeat their 2019/20 triumph, but as is always the case with soccer, there’s no guarantee Santa will deliver what you want.
